The Kalahari trip for Wilderness has been one of the most rewarding shoots I’ve worked on in recent years.
Filming with the San in Namibia was an incredible experience. The San are the oldest inhabitants of Africa stretching back over 20,000 years and their level of connection with their environment is nothing short of breathtaking. The knowledge passed down through the generations is a treasure trove, that a lot of other civilisations have simply forgotten, the very fact they had discovered a grub that lives only under a certain type of shrub, and that this grub could be used as a poison, strong enough to take a Wilderbeest down was breathtaking.
They take only what they needed and waste nothing from the scant resources available to them, which should be a lesson to us all.

Excited to share that Wilderness, a stunning series featuring adventurer and explorer Simon Reeve, is coming to BBC2 this Sunday. As a sound recordist and Drone Pilot, I had the privilege of working on two of the four episodes. An amazing adventure, from the frozen Southern Patagonian Icefield to the Kalahari desert. Coming face to face with wild Pumas in Patagonia and hunting with the San tribe in Namibia. It was one of the most challenging shoots I've undertaken in my 30 years of location sound. Don't miss this incredible series, which starts on Sunday 21st January BBC2 9pm.
